With all of the hullabaloo surrounding this amazing creature, misinformation and inadequate care can run rampant. Take care to avoid the issues and educate yourself with these basic bearded dragons tips.

Make the best environment

Unlike dogs are cats, which can pretty much survive in any part of the house, reptiles like bearded dragons need to be kept in large enclosures called vivariums. These should be spacious and include pieces of its natural habitat, like logs, branches, and plants. Make sure it’s also well ventilated.

Substrates should line the floor of the enclosure, which help your scaly friend walk more comfortably. You can look into tiles or reptile carpets for this.

Mind the temperature

Bearded dragons originated from Australia, which is known to be a pretty warm country. You’ve got to make sure that they also get the same amount of warmth in their vivariums by installing UVB lights. The warm side of the tank should be 35-43 degrees Celcius while the other should be around 24-29 degrees Celcius to make sure that beardies get the 12-14 hours of light they need every day.

Without this light, your pet can develop vitamin D deficiency and metabolic bone disease. Bonus tip: don’t forget to switch the light off at night and use a ceramic heat emitter to keep the temperature regulated.

Provide the right diet

Young dragons eat more insects while older ones eat more plant matter. For insects, you can feed them crickets, Dubia roaches, and mealworms; good nutritional greens would include mustard greens, collard greens, dandelion, and carrots.

They can also eat fruits like berries and bananas once a week. Chop up their food and grate them into small pieces to make it easier to digest. You’ve also got to make sure they’ve always got fresh water!

Check for issues

As with all animals, we can never know fully how they’re feeling because they can’t outright communicate with us. That’s why it’s important to get your reptile checked every 6-12 months. Watch out for more hiding time than usual, reduced appetite, discolored skin, abnormal droppings, and swollen joints.

If you worry that your pet may have a concerning health issue, don’t hesitate to bring them to your nearest reptile specialist.

All in all, we know bearded dragons are super cute and lovable. But the reality is, they’re still living creatures that need owners who have the proper knowledge to provide proper care. Think twice before you go out to get your reptile to make sure they get the best possible life!
