Questions to Ask Yourself Before Adopting a Pet This Quarantine

Having a fur baby around surely brings joy to any home. They’re great companions and can alleviate stress in these trying times, so there’s no surprise getting a pet has crossed your mind. Before committing to the idea, ask yourself if the time is right and if you’re getting one for the right reasons.

Can you afford it?

The number question you need to ask yourself is if you have the budget for it. Being a fur parent comes with responsibilities, many of which can be costly. Aside from food, you’ll also have to consider visits to the vet and grooming fees. If you barely make enough to cover your everyday expenses, you should hold off for a while.

Do you have space for them?

Some apartments aren’t pet-friendly so check with the landowner if it’s permitted. Once you get the greenlight, assess whether there’ll be enough room for them to roam freely. Even smaller house pets need space to move. Account for other people at home and discuss how they’ll feel about having another member around.

How much extra time do you have?

Owning a pet is a full-time job. You can’t just tend to your pet when it’s convenient for you. Would you dedicate time to take them out for daily walks, clean up after them, or train them? While there may be other people at home to care of them when you’re busy, it’s still ultimately your responsibility.

What will your life look like after lockdown?

Isolation shouldn’t be the sole reason you’re getting a pet. These friendly animals can make quarantine life less lonely, even more so when you’re home a lot these days. But what happens when things go back to normal and need to go to work? Dogs, especially, can develop separation anxiety when being apart for long periods from the people they’re attached to.

A pet is not just an object you can get rid of once you’re bored of them. They’re beings that need love and attention, so think about the long-term implications of being a pet owner before getting one.
