REPORT: remasters of Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas are on the way

”Ah sh**, here we go again.”

On Friday, August 13, IGN reported from a source that a remastered trilogy of classic Grand Theft Auto games is currently “in the final stages of development” care of Rockstar Games and due to arrive at multiple platforms, including the portable Nintendo Switch, by the last quarter of this year.

The report comes from video game website Kotaku, who also shared that the remastered titles include Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. These were redone using Unreal Engine and will be released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PC, Stadia, mobile devices, and on Switch.

Kotaku has also divulged that Rockstar’s Scottish division, Rockstar Dundee, is in charge of the project. This is the same company that’s tasked to develop the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ports of the upcoming GTA V expansion likewise set to be released later this year along with the remasters. They were originally slated to be bundled together with the upcoming GTA V and GTA Online next-generation ports, but plans have shifted due to the pandemic and it looks like the remasters will see light in a separate, stand-alone occasion.

Rumors of a remastered GTA title have been swirling around social media circles and message boards ever since Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, announced that three “iterations of previously released titles” are on the way. It also didn’t help to quell the buzz that the entity used DMCA takedowns to wipe fan-made remasters and mods off of the web.
