Classic music player Winamp is getting remastered

Talk about a nostalgic comeback! Well, it looks like, Winamp, which was first launched in 1997, is poised to make a return to pop culture.

The iconic music player, which was developed for Microsoft Windows, posted a teaser of its big return alongside a redesigned website promising to connect modern users to the music and artists they love.

You might be too young (or you might have not even exist) when Winamp was a huge thing, but here’s a quick refresher. The media player first grew in popularity with over three million downloads when it was first released in the late ’90s during the height of MP3 (music) file sharing. The media player is said to have a vibrant community of 80 million active users worldwide today.

“We’re building Winamp for the next generation. Not just updated, but totally remastered,” states Winamp’s new website. “The new Winamp connects you to your music wherever you are. It brings you closer to the artists you love. It’s home to your favorite music podcasts and radio stations,” it adds.

In addition to this, Winamp will also be supporting artists and audio creators by giving control over the content in a unique space, that will help them connect with fans and earn fairer income. The new website also states that the current 5.8 version will still be available to download.

Most details about the revamping of Winamp is still under wraps, but as per its parent company, Audio Valley, the vision of Winamp is “to become the one-stop platform for audio enthusiasts, which connects creators and consumers of music, podcasts, radio stations, audiobooks, and any other peripheral content.”

Basically, it will be more like Spotify as compared to its original model. Sounds exciting, right?
