Japanese Professor Develops Innovative ‘Tele-Taste’ Screen

A Japanese professor has developed a Taste the TV, A screen capable of simulating food flavors.

Homei Miyashita of Meiji University developed Taste the TV (TTTV). It reproduces the feeling of “eating at a restaurant while staying at home. The machine has ten flavor canisters. This canister will spray onto a film for the user to lick.

Yuki Hou demonstrated the TTTV for reporters. The 22-year-old student from Meiji University requested sweet chocolate. In a few moments, the machine automated the order, and the flavor jet sprayed the sample onto the plastic sheet.

What is Taste The TV?

Taste the TV (TTTV) is a machine that features a carousel of ten flavor canisters. It is sprayed to simulate the flavor of a specific dish. The flavor samples include sweet, salty, and also savory, wrapped in a sanitary film and placed on a flat TV screen for the viewer to try.

If you’re wondering who would need such a device, certainly it would be suitable for food connoisseurs and distance learning chefs. It could also potentially be used for tasting games and quizzes, as well.

Building the TTTV

According to Professor Miyashita, this technology could improve people’s connections with the outside world, especially in a pandemic. The Japanese researcher worked alongside a group of 30 students to create a variety of flavor-related devices, like forks that enhance the taste of food.

He said that he had built the TTTV prototype himself during the past year and that a commercial version would cost around ¥100,000 (₱44,440).

Miyashita also stated that he has considered adapting his spraying technology into devices that can apply pizza and chocolate flavors on pieces of toasted bread. In addition, he hopes to create a platform where users can download and enjoy tastes from around the world — like how music is now.
