Looks like Instagram won’t let you share posts to your stories anymore

Are you a “double poster” on Instagram? That is someone who shares their latest post on Instagram to their stories to alert their followers.

If you are, then buddy, we have some bad news: Instagram is looking into limiting their Stories feature by preventing users from linking feed posts.

That puppy post that’s so cute that you want the whole world to see it? You might have to share it with people one by one now. That new sponsored post that influencers are itching to boost the engagements of? They would just have to rely on luck and algorithm soon.

But why? According to a statement by Instagram, they’ve done research which reveals that people “prefer to see original photos and videos in Stories from the people they care about.”

“We hear from our community that they want to see fewer feed posts in stories. The goal of our test is to better understand how people feel about this type of content and ultimately improve the Stories experience,” it added.

Since the closing days of January, some users have already received a notification regarding Instagram’s test run, informing them that they will not be able to share posts from their timeline or others to their stories.

However, whether these tests are being rolled out as a response to “community feedback” leaves a gap as Instagram didn’t elaborate on why users had objected to the feature. It might even be considered disadvantageous by users who saw the feature as central to the Stories aspect of the photo-sharing app.

That’s because, while the sharing feature leads to posts becoming duplicated and repetitive, it has also been proven useful in turning attention to specific posts that might otherwise be lost in the algorithm’s shuffle. Some examples of such are posts by small businesses or calls to action by activist entities.

Nonetheless, Instagram was quick to clarify that the test will not affect a user’s ability to share IGTV previews and tweets directly to their stories. Who knows — if the people behind Instagram is indeed acting upon “community feedback,” then maybe we voicing our dislike over them removing the feature might make them rethink their decision.
