Microsoft Is Retiring Internet Explorer In 2022

Microsoft‘s 25-year-old web browser Internet Explorer will bid its final goodbye next year.

Microsoft Edge program manager Sean Lyndersay announced in a blog post that “the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.”

Internet Explorer 11 will no longer be supported by Microsoft 365 and other apps starting August 17, 2021, exactly 26 years since its launch. Microsoft recommends its users to transition to Microsoft Edge before the retirement of its older web browser on June 15, 2022.

“With Microsoft Edge, we provide a path to the web’s future while still respecting the web’s past. Change was necessary, but we didn’t want to leave reliable, still-functioning websites and applications behind,” Lyndersay said.

Listed as reasons why users should switch to Microsoft Edge are the following: improved compatibility with websites and applications, streamlined productivity, and better browser security. “If Internet Explorer has been your go-to for years, Microsoft Edge can now be your trusted web companion,” he said.

Lyndersay also thanked the users of Internet Explorer and expressed his hopes to continue working with them through Microsoft Edge.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for supporting Internet Explorer over the years. Many people and organizations around the world have depended on IE to support them as they’ve learned, grown and conducted business online. Microsoft Edge with Internet Explorer mode inherits this important responsibility, and we look forward to supporting you online with Microsoft Edge,” he said.
