What is Apple’s Digital Legacy and How to Set it up?

Have you ever thought about what happens to your digital data when you die? It may sound morbid, but Apple just released the iOS 15.2 update, and it comes with a new feature called Digital Legacy. According to the tech company, the new feature “allows you to designate people as Legacy Contracts so they can access your iCloud account and personal information in the event of your death.”

What is Apple’s Digital Legacy

Up until recently, it has been difficult for loved ones to gain access to an Apple account of a deceased friend or family member. They can’t retrieve pictures and other important information like phone numbers, emails, or notes if they don’t know the password. But with the new Digital Legacy feature, Apple grants certain people access to your data with ease.

How to set up Digital Legacy

It’s up to the user who to designate as their Legacy Contacts. You can choose up to five people but note that only individuals over 13-years-old can be assigned with a legacy key.

  • To activate this feature, make sure your iOS is up to date by going to Settings > General > Software Update.
  • Once you have iOS 15.2, go to Settings, and tap your name at the top.
  • Select “Legacy Contact.”
  • An access code will be sent to you. Print it and store it in a safe place.
  • When you die, your Digital Legacy contacts gain access to your iCloud by providing the code and death certificate to Apple.

Those who already use Apple’s Family Sharing service will find it easier to add members to their list. And in case you want to remove a person from the list, simply go to your Legacy Contacts and delete them from the options.

The latest update also added a new subscription plan that enables Apple Music via Siri and includes the App Privacy report, additional safety features in Messages for children and parents, and bug fixes for the iPhone.
