The Best Things About Being Single

It can sometimes feel hard to want to be single when everyone you see is paired up and apparently living their best lives with their significant other. You huff and sigh and wonder, “Why can’t that be me?”

But hold it right there. Contrary to popular belief, being single is actually not a thing to be sad over! Roaming the world and undergoing life-changing experiences without a pea to your pod is actually one of the most liberating things you can do in life.

So if you find yourself feeling down in the dumps for not having a hubby to cuddle up to, here are a couple reasons why going it alone is better than as a pair.

Lighter wallet, lighter pockets

It’s not a secret that having a girlfriend or boyfriend is expensive. We’ve got to think about birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s, Christmas, plus all of the regular eating out dates, movie dates, out of towns, and the gas it takes to do all these things!

While we give gifts and spend time with each other out of love, the money spent is no joke. When you’re single, you don’t have to spend on a darn thing except yourself (or your dogs or parents, maybe). You have one less person to worry about on your Christmas list, and one less holiday (goodbye, Valentine’s) to mind. Use what you have to invest in yourself and don’t hesitate to buy yourself something nice.

Socialization and dating galore

Being single means that you can meet every other person in the room. It means that you can go out freely and without abandon, and flirt with as many people as you like.

This is the time to spend days and nights with your best friends and to mingle and date. And dating doesn’t necessarily mean committing. People forget that dating is really just a means of getting to know another person, and subsequently, getting to know yourself! There’s no shame in wanting to meet with different people and experience different things.

The freedom to fall in love with yourself

Maybe the best part about being single is that you have all the time in the world to explore the person most important to you and your well-being — yourself! It’s a good period of your life where you can learn how to become independent, to love yourself before loving someone else.

It is in this “single” time of your life where you will get to know and understand who you are and what you want. You’ll be able to feel more fulfilled as an individual as you genuinely enjoy alone time without feeling lonely. You’ll also be able to deepen the more meaningful relationships that you have in your life (aka your friends and family).

See? Being single isn’t as bad as it seems. It could actually be the precursor to your next soul-searching adventure or the catalyst to your long-awaited self-actualization. Or it could just mean a really fun night in, jammies on with ice cream in a mug and a true crime documentary playing in the background.

Whatever it is, don’t be afraid to enjoy and love you. You’re worth it!
