This website can eerily resurrect your loved ones from the dead

The thought of losing someone important in our lives can be quite frightening. But as the saying goes: “We understand death only after it has placed its hands on someone we love.” And as painful as it may seem, death is something we can never escape – not in this lifetime. So should the time to say goodbye to someone dear to you comes, the only way to accept the loss is to go through the whole grieving process. Truth is, all we want is to see our dear loved ones one last time – even if we all know it’s next to impossible.

But what if you’re given a chance to see the ones you love? Not just once, but as many times as you want? That’s exactly what a genealogy website called MyHeritage does. That’s right. There’s an app that can eerily resurrect your loved ones from the dead. Well, sort of. All you need is a photo of the person you wish to see and voila, you’ll see them moving like they’re alive all over again.

MyHeritage classifies itself as “deep nostalgia” or a trademarked feature that uses various drivers to animate any photos. From a simple still shot, MyHeritage can create high-quality, realistic video footage. Thanks to a company which “specializes in video reenactment using deep learning” called D-ID, you can now make any member of your family tree smile, blink, and turn their heads all at the same time. Yep, even the ones who existed in the early 1900s.

While the technology may seem cool and amazing to some (since it kinda brings nostalgic moments in a way), there are also those who find it creepy because of the uncanny results it produces in almost an instant! Ever heard of “deep fake”? Well, it’s exactly that minus the audio!

Apparently, non-subscribers of MyHeritage can generate several, but only a limited number of animations. So if you’re planning on animating photos of all the people in your lineage you may or may not have personally met a.k.a. your ancestors, you would need to make a subscription process for it to happen.

To those who are having apprehensions about trying the app due to privacy concerns, well, you need not worry about anything. Well, at least based on what MyHeritage claims. Apparently, it has servers that protect photos and videos from third parties. Oh, and copyright-wise, MyHeritage does not own and will not own any of the videos you plan to produce.

As of writing, it has already generated 66 million animations and counting! Wow. That’s a lot!

Honestly, technology never felt this much scary. But if doing so can bring our loved ones back from the dead, it’ll never hurt if you try!
