‘Tokyo Revengers’ breaks Attack on Titan’s eight-year manga sales record

According to anime news website Anime SenpaiKen Wakui’s manga series Tokyo Revengers has beaten the manga sales record set by another popular manga, Attack on Titan, back in 2013.

Launched in 2017, Tokyo Revengers has now sold more than 16.5 million copies in 2021, setting the record for highest-selling manga within a year for Kodansha’s , the magazine that serializes both manga titles. This surpassed Attack on Titan’s Kodansha sales record of 15.9 million manga copies from eight years ago. And this is considering that Tokyo Revengers still has 14 weeks left to complete the calendar.

Adapted as an anime series by Liden Films last April, Tokyo Revengers follows middle-aged deadbeat Takemichi Hanagaki who travels back in time to save his younger brother Naoto and middle school ex-girlfriend Hinata from being killed by the notorious Tokyo Manji Gang, and in the process becomes the leader of a school gang himself.

Despite a perceived decline in the quality of its anime adaptation, the reputation of Tokyo Revengers as a manga cannot be questioned. Currently, it’s the third best-selling manga series in the first half of the year, sitting behind Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Last year, the title won the 44th Kodansha Award for the shōnen category.
