With great power comes great responsibility. You might recall this iconic quote from the OG Spider-man movie that was released almost 20 years ago (yes, it came out in 2002). It’s something a lot of people in leadership positions can relate to.

Being a leader presents itself with a lot of problems to begin, but enter a global pandemic, and the pressure to deliver and keep your team productive and motivated can be quite challenging. However, there are five types of pains that may actually be beneficial in the long run. Why? They bring out your highest potential. Without further ado, here are five pains every leader must face according to Entrepreneur Magazine:

  1. The pain of rejection. As humans, we’re pre-conditioned to try to avoid pain as much as possible. Being a leader means having to deal with potential rejection. In order to open new doors, you have to take risks, and sometimes, the outcome isn’t what you envisioned it to be. However, this paves the way to better ideas, and innovative ways to achieve your goals.
  1. The pain of uncomfortable situations. It’s normal to want to avoid uncomfortable situations. As a leader though, you have to face the music and take concrete action for the betterment of your team and the organization you work for.
  1. The pain of difficult conversations. The fact of the matter is that leadership is riddled with tough discussions. That’s why you should look at things from a parent’s perspective. Your goal is to elevate the team to be the best version of themselves to deliver your collective goals. Sometimes, you need to discuss hard topics to help people grow.
  1. The pain of asking for help. While you can do a lot of things, you can’t do everything, especially if you have big goals. As your business or department continues to grow, you need to call in the troops. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It signals growth.
  1. The pain of recalibrating your life. You need to put in the work in order to attain your goals. That means having to sacrifice time, and shifting your priorities to accommodate what it takes to get to where you want to be.

Being a leader is anything but easy, but the rewards are worth the pains you have to face. In case things get overwhelming, just think about this: bosses tell people what to do, while leaders show them how it’s done. What kind of person are YOU?
