How to get through a lonely holiday season

It’s December 2021 and COVID-19 is still surging. New variants and imminent lockdowns plague your mind as you doom-scroll through social media. With all that’s going on, you definitely won’t be able to see friends, or even your family — another Christmas alone.

How to get through a lonely holiday season

Rest assured, with the likely millions of other people around the world who may spend the holiday season isolated, you aren’t really alone. There are tons of things you can do to raise your spirits when you’re feeling a bit down. Here are some simple ways to get through the “happiest” season.

Online parties

This one’s not a surprise, but it’s one of the best options you’ve got at staying connected with people over long distance. Set up a Zoom party with your friends and loved ones to remind yourself that while you are physically alone, the right people are there for you during important times. Don’t be afraid to make the party festive by organizing games and activities; it may seem like a little bit of work, but it’ll definitely be worth the fun you’ll enjoy during your call.

Work

Working during the holidays may not be everyone’s cup of tea but it might be yours! Hear us out, what better way to distract yourself from your loneliness by stressing yourself out? All jokes aside, work is a great distraction in itself. It’s time-consuming, tedious, and all in all, productive. If no other activity makes you feel better, sit down and open up your work laptop — it’s time to focus.

Hobbies

Make art, create, read, do sports! Your hobbies make you happy for a reason, and what better time to practice them than now? Instead of thinking about what you aren’t doing with your friends and family, work your mind and imagination by doing the things you love. These hobbies will relax you and keep you happy in your own little way.

Therapy session

You don’t actually have to go to your therapist (though you can if you feel like that’ll help you process your feelings). We mean that you should give yourself your own therapy session by clearing your mind, letting yourself be sad, and embracing the feeling by taking care of your mind and body. Deep clean your house, set up a bubble bath, and enjoy the peace of being alone. If you can accept the situation and reframe your mindset, the negative feelings will pass in no time.

Do something

Do something, anything! Have a good dinner out alone, start a movie marathon, or go on an online shopping spree. But our suggestion? Try and volunteer. You can make the holiday season more meaningful for yourself by sharing your time with others. There are many causes that you can donate your time and resources to; maybe volunteer at a dog shelter, give out gifts for the homeless, or simply donate old clothes and belongings to organizations like Caritas Manila.

The season of giving can mean a lot of things. Give genuine time to yourself and others and you’ll find that being alone on Christmas isn’t so lonely after all!
