You might not like your baby

What to Expect When You’re Expecting: 5 Tips for New Mothers

This one’s surprising, but it happens more than you think. Of course you love your child, but between the sleepless nights, round-the-clock care, and constant crying, it can be hard to like them. Many women go through postpartum depression, and not liking your child can be a part of this. Things do get easier, however, when you gradually adapt to each other and form that natural connection. It’s normal, so don’t feel bad!

You don’t need expensive branded baby items

Buying baby goods is always tough on new parents, simply because everybody wants the best for baby. But children are expensive, and branded is just as good as generic. As a new mom, you’ll soon find that expensive branded items aren’t worth that much more than generic brands; most things work the same, so choose what you want to spend on wisely.

You might feel guilty

Leaving your baby to the grandparents so you can relax with friends or go on a trip with your hubby will make you feel guiltier than you should. Even grabbing dinner without your infant can make you feel horrible! Mom guilt is real, and the sooner you come to terms with it, the better it’ll get. Just know that it’s okay to spend some time without your child, and that it’s okay to leave them with trusted guardians (even if mother does know best).

You won’t want to ask for help, but you should

New parents know the feeling of “us against the world”. Babies are such important responsibilities that parents understandably feel pressured to only do and give their best in order to be a good mom or dad. It’s a noble cause, but it’s also exhausting. Asking for help from close friends and family should be encouraged and should ultimately be the norm in this day and age. After all, you also need a sound body and mind to make the best decisions for your baby.

You need rest too

Between waking up every hour, to bathing, feeding, burping, and playing with your little one, you can lose yourself. This is also why postpartum depression is so rampant in new mothers, because all of the duties and pressure eventually takes a toll on their physical and mental health. In line with asking for help with baby duties, you should know when to take a break. Mothers are humans too, and they’ve got their own special set of needs, so don’t skip out on that relaxing spa day or that 3-hour long nap!
