You can now manually hide like and view counts on Instagram posts

Chasing clout and curating feeds on Instagram can take a toll on your mental health, which is why Facebook has finally rolled out the option to hide like and view counts on Instagram posts. While the new feature still shows who liked which post, the exact figures are kept hidden if it’s toggled on.

The feature has been tested for a couple of years now, with Instagram citing the need to “depressurize people’s experience” on the social platform. As reports have shown, users would painstakingly work towards getting more likes or craft their Instagram feeds in the name of clout or popularity, often feeling anxious or embarrassed if they did not meet their target double-taps.

For the rest of the users, it wasn’t a particularly pleasant experience too, as they would be shown “popular” and performative content instead of authentic posts that they genuinely connect to.

However, Instagram still has to grapple with keeping such an intrinsic aspect of the application. After all, the metric is still useful for, say, marketers who turn to it for data analysis or influencers who track it as a form of currency for their line of work. Hence, offering it as but an option rose as the best solution for all.

“What one person wants from their Instagram experience is different from the next, and people’s needs are changing. We’ve been working closely with third-party experts to better understand how to empower people, build self-awareness and shape a more positive experience on Instagram,” Instagram’s blog post read.

How to turn off like and view counts

To free your mind of those pesky metrics, simply click the hamburger icon on the top-right of your profile and click “Settings.” Click “Privacy,” then “Posts.” From there, toggle the “Hide Like and View Counts.”

If you want to hide the likes and views on your own posts, however, you’d have to do that for every individual post so that they’re kept hidden from everyone.

According to TechCrunch, we’re bound to get the same treatment for Facebook, though instructions on how to disable like and share counts on the highly-pressurized platform are still unknown.
