How Alden Richards Avoids “Budol” Shopping

Alden Richards admits he’s also not safe from budol shopping

Alden Richards supports consumers who subscribe to the #DeserveKoTo hashtag, or those who buy their wants after a job well done.

In the world of hustle culture, Richards sees the importance of having “a reward system” for working hard. He says, “We work hard and, of course, treat ourselves every now and then. So, yung kapag sinasabing ‘Deserve ko ‘to’ and you will buy something for yourself, I think it’s worth it. I think you deserve it no matter who you are, where you are from, what you do.

Kung talagang you know yourself na after you purchased a certain thing—doesn’t matter naman kung material. Maybe, minsan, you can treat yourself to go to a vacation, drive yun to work hard even [more]. If it continues on a systematic kind of way sa buhay mo, di ka mabu-burn out, di ka mawawalan ng gana sa trabaho.”

But of course, Richards knows that the #DeserveKoTo mindset has its limitations. In fact, he makes sure that he also avoids going overboard—to the point that shopping has become a budol for him.

Asia’s Multimedia Superstar explains, “At one point, if it feels like talagang hindi na siya tumutugmaKasi, of course, when you say deserve, you get something or you pay a certain amount for something that you want. So, involved na yung pera.

“So, kung medyo you’re spending beyond your means, baka yun na yung abuso ng #DeserveKoTo hashtag. Huwag naman ganun.”

Richards spoke to FreebieMNL and other reporters during Lazada’s 11th Epic Birthday Super Show at the Market! Market! Activity Center on March 2, 2023.

How Alden Richards keeps himself free from budol shopping

Richards admits that budol shopping is something hard to avoid. For some, scrolling through shopping apps has also become a habit similar to social media browsing.

He expounds, “Naku, medyo mahirap kasi sabi ko nga on stage, lately, yung pagla-Lazada, parang past time na yan, e. Kasi usually, you go to bed, social media-social media. And then, at one point, mabo-bore ka sa social media, ‘Ano kaya meron sa Lazada?’ Because sometimes, like myself, kapag pupunta ako sa Lazada app, minsan wala talaga akong bibilhin but you’ll end up buying something! Yun kasi yung budol talaga, e.”

But then, Richards makes sure that the items he buys are really what he needs and not budol at all. He continues, “Sometimes, when you see something on social media, may ganito palang item. But I make sure whenever I buy something, it makes my life even more comfortable. Kasi hindi naman siya luho lang, e. Kumbaga, yung mga pang-linis ng cellphone, lint remover ng carpet. So, yun lang yung mga pinagbibili ko sa Lazada kapag may time.”

Shopping priorities for March

Of course, Richards already has things to add in his cart. His priorities right now are mostly summer essentials.

“Since March na, siyempre, magbi-beach-beach na tayo. So, nagpre-prep na naman tayo para sa mga pa-katawan diyan. Kasi family’s planning a beach trip this March. So, depende talaga sa buwan kung anong priority sa cart ng consumers, especially ng mga ka-Lazada natin. So, siyempre mga swimwear, swim shorts, beach essentials, salbabida, mga mini-surfboard. Yun yung mga nakalagay ngayon [sa cart ko].”

Richards and his family are planning to go to Siargao and even study surfing! He shares, “My cousin lives there and madalas din talaga ako doon nagpupunta kasi maganda kasi yung beach and habang fresh pa siya. Actually, well-known naman na yung Siargao, but what I’m trying to say is hindi pa siya masyadong maraming tao at the moment.”

Being a Lazada ambassador

Meanwhile, Richards has been enjoying being a Lazada ambassador for almost three years now. He even waxes nostalgic as the e-commerce platform celebrates its 11th year in the Philippines.

“When Lazada started here in the Philippines 11 years ago, kasabay ko siya, yung showbiz career ko. Come to think of it, ngayon ko lang na-realize, sabay lang pala kami ni Lazada na nag-launch sa buhay namin.”

He is also proud as an ambassador about the comfort that Lazada gives to its consumers.

He narrates, “I think Lazada is one of the most respected e-commerce platforms in the whole of Asia and we’re very proud. Kapag tinatanong ako kung ano yung mga ine-endorse kong products sa Philippines, of course, sinasabi ko agad Lazada because it’s well-known. Actually, hindi lang sa atin, even our kababayans abroad and outside of Asia, kilala rin siya. So, it’s really something to be proud of and, of course, the deals that you get out of the platform.

At saka yung mga special perks and privileges na binibigay sa mga loyal customers, it’s always there like vouchers, cashbacks, free shipping. That’s what we want as consumers, yung comfort when we do our shopping in the comforts of our homes. Siyempre, aside from the fact na of course, what the pandemic has brought us, yung ayaw natin lumabas. At least, Lazada caters to our safety as well. Pero yun nga, ini-improve nila yung services nila every now and then. Like ngayon, [may] next-day delivery, may COD at the same time. So, masarap sa pakiramdam and sana more years to come.”
