6 Effective Ingredients for Your Skincare

With so many beauty products promising to give you better skin, it could be overwhelming to choose the right one. Don’t fall for the trap of buying something purely for the cute packaging. Instead, narrow down on the ingredients list to find out if will be effective in addressing your skin concerns.

Acne-Prone Skin

Treating breakouts requires a lot of patience and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHA). BHA’s are another chemical exfoliant and are usually paired with AHAs. Dermatologists recommend using products with salicylic acid because it’s a pimple fighting ingredient that helps loosen blackheads and clear pores.

Aging Skin

Fine lines and wrinkles are signs of aging that can be treated with retinol. The over-the-counter ingredient promotes skin cell turnover, lightens age spots, and combats wrinkle formation. Using anti-aging products as early as your twenties will keep you looking young, even as you age.

Dry Skin

Hyaluronic acid is best known for its hydrating properties, which is why it’s recommended for those with dry or patchy skin. Dr. Kavita Mariwalla, M.D. suggests skipping products with micronized hyaluronic acid and look for plain-old HA to get the most moisturizing effects

Dull Skin

To achieve brighter, glowing skin, add products with Vitamin C to your routine. It’s full of antioxidants, protects the skin from sun damage, and has brightening effects. Layer it under your sunscreen in the morning and under your night cream in the evening.

Inflamed Skin

While you can’t actually shrink enlarged pores, you could improve the appearance and make it look smaller using niacinamide. Niacinamide is an anti-inflammatory ingredient that can be used to treat acne, rosacea, and hyper-pigmentation. This is also a great ingredient for controlling excess oil.

Textured Skin

If you’re looking to improve your skin tone and texture, choose products with Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA). Common AHAs include glycolic, lactic, and mandelic acids and are chemical exfoliants that are gentle on the skin. They work by removing dead skin cells to help smoothen out textured skin.

There’s no such thing as the perfect product and you’ll usually have to use a combination of ingredients to see results. Even holy grail products might not have the desired effect on your skin. It’s best to consult with a certified dermatologist to get a better assessment.
