Almost every person who’s wanted to get creative with their hair color has undergone the process of bleaching. It’s a step you shouldn’t skip if you wish to get the right shade of golden locks, pastel tresses, or ombre layers. But the treatment isn’t without caveats.

Bleached hair is not easy to maintain. Because of how damaging it is, you’ll have to deal with frizzy hair, brittle strands, and maybe even hair loss. We know how alarming this all sounds, especially for those who have never have their hair bleached. Fortunately, there’s a way to keep treated hair healthy, so you aren’t discouraged to continue with the procedure.

Get it done by a professional

Watching a tutorial on the internet doesn’t automatically qualify you to bleach your hair. DIY-ing might save you some money, but you should leave the job to a professional hairdresser. These people know what they’re doing and will deliver the results you desire.

Invest in Hair Care Products

Quality hair care products are expensive upfront but worth it in the long run. Prevent and manage damaged hair by using the right products, such as sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner formulated for treated hair.

Apply hair treatments

Applying hair masks from time to time is also recommended to keep your bleached hair healthy. Natural alternatives that are beneficial for your dry hair are aloe vera and virgin coconut oil.

Limit hair washes

According to fashion photographer Andrea Baldua, you should never wash your hair daily if you have bleached hair. Take half baths instead to prevent drying out your hair and retain your scalp’s natural oils.

Avoid heating product

Having your hair bleached is damaging enough, and you don’t want to weaken the strands further. Refrain from using heating tools like hair straighteners, blow dryers, and curling irons, or else risk getting your hair fried.

Style with caution

Another tip is to limit pulling your ponytail too tight to avoid breakage. If you need to put your hair up, hair colorist Emaly Baum suggests using hair clamps instead.

Keeping your bleached hair healthy doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require a lot of work. When all else fails, be patient and grow your hair out before going through another bleaching session.
