This pride month, Bretman Rock is gracing the cover of Nylon Manila. Together with an all-Filipino team in LA, they were able to pull off nine layouts on the rooftop of the Gerry Building. The YouTube and Reality TV star dedicates this edition to all the gays and shares what makes him proud.
A Proud Gay and Filipino Man
“This is for all Baklas 🌈✨🤠because we all deserve our own @nylonmanila Covers,” reads the caption of his Instagram post. Bretman has remained authentic on and off camera and has never shied away from his heritage or his sexuality. This was his first Nylon cover shoot and it was a magical moment for him. He’s the definition of self-made and is rightfully proud of himself and all the hard work he has put into getting where he is now.
Behind The Scenes
He worked with an entire team of Filipino creatives in LA while being on FaceTime with the Manila team the whole day. They even enjoyed some bibinka and Jollibee on the set, which made the project Filipino through and through. In one of his covers, Bretman wore a white embellished coat with matching pants by renowned couturier Michael Cinco. The look was completed with a pearl necklace and earrings by Jewelmer and make-up inspired by the Filipino flag colors.
The Importance of Representation
“It’s not all the time that you get to see an openly gay man on the cover of a magazine, especially back home in the Philippines.” Bretman acknowledges how huge his platform is and is vocal about everything he’s passionate about. “Like I said in my caption, my cover is like my love letter to all of the gay, queer, Filipino kids out there because I believe that we all deserve our own magazine cover,” he tells Nylon.
Being a role model is not something Bretman takes for granted. The best he can do is represent his community and continue to be his unapologetic self. “Just me being gay every day is already a political statement, let’s just say that.” Agreed.
