Sneaker King: MJ and His Air Jordans Continue to Take Flight with the Last Dance

In just five weeks, the greatness of Michael Jordan has been witnessed once again on national television. All this was made possible with the showing of “The Last Dance”, a ten episode series that spans its storyline two decades enroute to Jordan and the Bulls’ last NBA championship.

Apart from Air Jordan’s competitive spirit, Scottie Pippen’s amazing endurance to pain, and Phil Jackson’s wizardly coaching skills, the documentary also showcased Michael Jordan’s collection of in-game worn shoes. Here’s a look at three of the most noteworthy Air Jordans featured in the series.

If you’re a true basketball fan and a shoe collector, you would now how valuable Air Jordan 1s are. Released in 1984, the first Air Jordan shoe has been a staple of street ball in the late 80’s and has started the revolution of basketball sneakers.

The Last Dance was able to retell Michael Jordan’s love for the Madison Square Garden and how he paid tribute to his last game as a member of the Bulls in the infamous New York Arena. He wore a retro Air Jordan 1 with the intention of going out as how he came in. Despite the shoes’ technology 13 years behind what he’s been used to wearing, he endured the pain, scored 42 points and led his team to a win. He did admit that he went to the locker room with his socks soaked in blood though.

Air Jordan I- historical and revolutionary, a true shoe collector’s must have.

In typical Phil Jackson fashion, he themed the 1998 season as “The Last Dance” even before the off-season camp started; a fitting name too for the 10 episode series. The Bulls’ season as well as the documentary was capped off by one iconic moment, Michael Jordan’s go ahead bucket over Bryon Russell, leaving less than 6 seconds into the game.

Debate on whether it was a clean play or a push from Jordan will always be a source of argument among fans. Nevertheless, what was cemented in history was Jordan’s killer instinct and determination to sink the last shot and win the championship for the Bulls, one last time. In that epic game against the Utah Jazz, Jordan sported the Air Jordan XIV. He debuted it in that finals series, months earlier than expected by many, prompting it was really his last year as a member of the Bulls.

The last championship, the last shot, the last shoes he wore as a Bull, truly a must have for basketball fans and shoe collectors.
