DIY Hair Color: Top Five Products You Should Buy If You Want Fun, Funky Hair

Achieve salon-style looks at the fraction of the cost.

There was a time when people saw me as somewhat of a unicorn. It had a lot to do with the color of my hair. Mind you, I didn’t sport my natural hair color from 2013 until 2020.

Friends and strangers alike always ask what salon I go to and how much it cost. Everyone always looks surprised when I say that I do it at home. Sometimes I do it myself, often with the help of my mom.

Achieving fun and funky hair is easy when you know what products to use. Here are some brands you may want to shop for.

Bremod

If you’re used to chemical dyes and want some bang for your buck, this is the product for you. Bremod hair colors come in a wide range of shades, including pastel, gray, and solid hues.

Like with most funky hair colors, your hair does need bleaching before application. The good news is that Bremod products are affordable. So you can stock up on hair color without breaking the bank.

Pro tip: you can take Bremod’s darker shades and mix them with your conditioner instead of an oxidizer. This way, you can deposit color and treat your hair simultaneously. Do note that your hair needs to be a lighter shade for this to work.

Manic Panic

This brand was the gateway to my hair color journey. Manic Panic offers a wide range of vegan and cruelty-free dyes.

One of my go-to shades is Manic Panic Ultra Violet. One, because I’m a fan of the Milla Jovovich movie. And two, because purple is my favorite color.

Arctic Fox Hair Color

Like Manic Panic, Arctic Fox is a vegan, cruelty-free brand. Compared to the former, its dyes last longer by several weeks. It does stain more though, so that’s something to consider.

Arctic Fox Hair Color comes in 4oz and 8oz bottles. The smaller bottle should be enough for chin-length to above-the-shoulder hair.

Technicolor

You don’t have to reach for imported brands for your fun hair color. Local dye brands like Technicolor fill the need for affordable products that achieve similar results as imports. The one caveat is that it’s not as long-lasting as Manic Panic or Arctic Fox. But given the price point, it’s not a bad deal.

If you’re interested in trying this brand out, consider getting a Technicolor Hair Bleach Set. For under P250, you get bleach powder, oxidizer, keratin treatment, and a 140ml bottle of dye.

Splat Hair Color

The previous products I mentioned are all cream dyes. Splat Hair Color is a liquid dye. So if this is your first foray into DIY hair, it may pose a challenge. But if you have someone to help you, working with Splat will be a cinch.

Splat is the brand that I recommend the most to anyone interested in funky hair colors. This is in big part because of its Lightening Bleach Kit. I’m not 100% sure what’s in their formula. But for some reason, my hair feels softer after using Splat’s bleach.

Another great thing about Splat is that most of its dye kits come with bleach. If you want to try many colors at once, get the Splat Hair Color Ombre Kit. Each kit has bleach powder, an oxidizer, and two dyes. Splat also has one-color kits with varying longevity. You can choose from 1-wash, 10-wash, and 30-wash kits.

Your next hair color

You can’t go wrong with any of the brands above. All that’s left now is deciding what color you want and when to do it.
