If you’re planning to fly to Boracay soon, please don’t skip out on fulfilling all the safety protocols.
That’s because as of January 22, the local government of Aklan has ordered the temporary closure of Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa after the discovery that at least 16 of the hotel’s staff and employees tested positive for COVID-19.
The news came to light after routine RT-PCR testing by Aklan’s Provincial Health Office to all hotel colleagues revealed that a small number had contracted the virus.
The closure will last until January 28. In the meantime, the hotel management has helped in transferring their guests into other resorts in Boracay. In their statement, Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort and Spa also said that they will use the time for “further deep cleaning and disinfection” of the entire resort.
“The resort is in full compliance with the guidelines provided by the local authorities wit
h regards to next steps after our colleagues undergo RT-PCR testing. After being notified of the test results, affected colleagues were all placed in self-isolation in accordance with guidelines from the authorities and we are supporting them in any way we can during this period,” the statement from the hotel management read.
“We can confirm these colleagues were asymptomatic and did not exhibit any outward symptoms or reported feeling unwell on the days they were on duty. Comprehensive contact tracing has been conducted and as a precautionary measure, close contacts of the affected colleagues have also been asked to self-isolate until further notice.”
Since opening last October, Boracay has seen a slew of health protocol breaches committed by both tourists and business establishments alike.
Last November, a resort that lacked the necessary clearances were shuttered for hosting a Halloween party that failed to observe social distancing rules.
Then last December, six tourists were arrested after they were caught falsifying their COVID-19 results to enter the province.
