It’s been nearly two years since the start of the pandemic. Nowadays, most of the global workforce has embraced remote and hybrid work. The change in work setup has prompted many people to embrace traveling, primarily because, for the first time, millions of people can work anywhere.

Airbnb platform has found plenty of interesting findings. According to the Airbnb platform, one out of the five nights booked in the third quarter of 2021 was for 28 days or more extended stays. Nearly half of the booking in the same period was for at least seven-day visits. This is a 44% increase from stays in 2019.

In addition, in the 12 months through September, more than 100,000 guests booked stays of 90 days or longer. More than 300,000 guests have applied to live anywhere on Airbnb for a year. These findings prompted Airbnb to revisit the company’s product development and upgrades.

Interestingly, Airbnb CEO and Co-Founder Brian Chesky announced that, like these adventurous guests, he, too, will live on Airbnb. He plans on staying in other people’s homes in new towns and cities for a few weeks. He also intends to come back to San Francisco now and then to collaborate with colleagues.

So, what will the future look like? Airbnb anticipates these trends to take over soon:

  1. People will still spread out to thousands of towns and cities, and they will stay for weeks, months, or even longer. Airbnb shared that 100,000 cities and towns have had Airbnb bookings amid the pandemic. In the third quarter of 2021, over 85 percent of long-term stay nights booked in the Philippines were for stays in urban destinations. Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Baguio emerged as the top searched destinations for long-term stays.
  1. More people will opt to live abroad. Some will travel there for the entire summer, while some will even give up their leases and become digital nomads. A lot of people want to explore new countries. On the local front, 45% of Pinoys claimed that they wanted to rent out their homes and travel.
  1. Cities and countries will compete to attract these remote workers, which will lead to a redistribution of where people travel and live. More nations are changing their visa and tax rules. So far, 39 countries offer some sort of digital nomad visa scheme.

The ongoing pandemic may have changed people’s lives, but it has also paved the way for new opportunities like these. People looking for a change should look into embracing the digital nomad life.
