First, the classic Japanese franchise brought the game to life with Niantic’s Pokémon Go!, a mobile game where virtual trainers get to “catch” Pokémon amid an augmented reality landscape. Now, The Pokémon Company is taking it a rung higher by revealing its latest creation: Pokémon Wonder.
Billed as a nature-themed park build for “nature adventure,” Pokémon Wonder rests on a whopping 48,000-square foot forest that’s been left untouched for the last twenty years. It’s located in Inagi City, just behind Tokyo’s largest amusement park, Yomiuriland.
Instead of using the vast virgin landscape to build a Pokémon-themed amusement park, the company preserved the rich natural setting in hopes of helping their audience both young and old alike to reconnect with nature by taking on the role of a Pokémon researcher.
There, they can comb through lush forests, trekking across grassy fields, and look deep into bamboo thickets in search of disguised Pocket Monsters made from materials such as leaves and acorns.
A Seedot made from a Hokkaido acorn, a marble-etched Omanyte, a Metapod cut from a single palm leaf, and a disguised Diglett half-submerged into the ground are just some of the “wild” Pokémon easter eggs that visitors can scour the entire forest for in a grand nature quest.
