If you’re spending too much time on social media like us, you may have seen the viral Radio Garden, the nifty app that lets you tune into radio stations from across the world.
It seems we’ve found something better: the Drive & Listen app. For the same reasons we turn to lo-fi beats to chill while working, Drive & Listen lets you listen to international radio stations while “driving” through virtual facsimiles of major cities across the globe. It’s like you’re on a road trip, vibing to restful tunes and enjoying the view, without having to leave your desk.
Currently, there are 53 major cities on the app’s database for you to choose from. You can skip songs, adjust the car speed, as well as activate the street noises in the background for the full ASMR experience.
Drive through the sunny highways of Hawaii or cruise along the bustling streets of Seoul. From Melbourne to Mumbai, from Tokyo to Toronto, the sights and sounds of the virtual routes are as high-def as it gets.
The app was created by a Turkish graduate student from Munich named Erkam Seker, who sourced the dashcam footages from YouTube. In an interview with travel site Lonely Planet, Seker shared that he created the app because was growing homesick for Istanbul.
“I was missing riding around my city, even the traffic and the fuss of daily life, so I found myself watching videos of Istanbul. It was so fun to see my city, but I thought why not listen to some radio in the background to get the whole riding-in-cars experience?” he said.
Then his penchant for touring his own nation’s street grew to include other picturesque cities around the world. Thus, he added other street tours for the sake of those who are bored stiff and can’t satisfy their wanderlust.
Until we can safely travel and see the beauty of another country, this app should suffice for now.
