Make sure to bring your boards on your next trip, because the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, Siargao, has finally reopened to local travelers! Mayor Cecilia Rusillon of General Luna, Surigao del Norte made the decision official with the signing of an executive order allowing travel to and from the municipality starting Monday, November 23.

“This is encouraging news for everyone who loves the sea, especially the surfers. As Siargao reopens to travelers, subject to minimum health and safety standards, the people of the island will regain their livelihood and share their paradise to our kababayans once more with the same level of hospitality they have always been known for,“ Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said.

We should emphasize that “subject to minimum health and safety standards” part because Siargao will make sure to observe strict compliance.

According to Executive Order No. 15, Series of 2020 circulated by the municipal government of General Luna, all tourists arriving at the island via Surigao City and Sayak Airport must have an e-Health Pass issued by the provincial government of Surigao del Norte (you can get yours here) and a valid ID.

They must also present a negative RT-PCR result taken within 48 hours from point of origin. Should the passenger fail to provide this, a negative antigen swab result will be required upon arrival date.

As is the protocol for other tourist destinations, visiting tourists must also show their round-trip ticket and travel itineraries, as well as a five-day confirmed booking from a hotel or accommodation that has been furnished a Provisional Certificate of Authority to Operate by the Department of Tourism.

Once on the island, tourists will also be required to undergo an antigen swab test within seven days of their last test date, solely for monitoring purposes.
