It has a lot to do with the travel budget.
Spending over two years in lockdown had everyone feeling some cabin fever. Now that domestic and international borders are open, many are making travel plans. Most are traveling abroad.
Traveling during the pandemic is tricky. People needed to secure documents and undergo mandatory quarantine during the harsher lockdowns. These days, travel is inching back to what it was before the pandemic, albeit with mask mandates.
As more international borders reopened, I found myself wanting to travel. But to be honest, I prefer going abroad to touring the Philippines.
Why I love traveling abroad
Don’t get me wrong. I love the Philippines and everything it has to offer when it comes to local travel destinations. What turns me off is how exorbitant the prices are around the country.
Discounted plane fares aside, a round-trip ticket to Siargao can cost upwards of PHP8,000. You can go to Singapore for the same price! Depending on your chosen dates, you can even hop on a plane to Thailand for less.
There’s also the travel budget to consider. Accommodations and restaurants at local destinations have high price tags. That’s understandable because local tourist destinations do need to earn.
Try traveling to Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia or Vietnam. The Philippine peso remains competitive in these places. Not only can you get a lot of bang for your buck, but you can also experience a new culture. If you research well enough, you can join free tours. You’ll only need to tip the guides.
Don’t forget about the food. Traveling around the Philippines allows you to try regional cuisine. But for the most part, tourist destinations will serve barbecued pork as regular fare. Traveling abroad allows you to try new dishes at local restaurants and see what fast food is like in a different country.
Travel when you can
Traveling the world is a lot different now than it was before the pandemic. If COVID has taught me anything, it’s that you don’t want to miss out on any experiences.
