Amidst the destruction that Typhoon Odette has caused, Cebu governor Gwen Garcia has decided that the province will not be requesting aid from the national government.
“Cebu will not demand because of the massive destruction of Typhoon Odette also in other provinces. Moreover, We will just help ourselves here in Cebu. We will just do what we can to survive,” Gwen Garcia stated. She also emphasized the provincial government’s role in providing help to those in need during the disaster.
Typhoon Odette ravaged the Visayas and Mindanao region of the Philippines on December 16, 2021. As a result, it left almost 400 people dead and countless more injured or missing people. With winds up to 160 mph. The super typhoon Odette quickly became the strongest storm to hit the country this year.
Areas like Cebu, Bohol, Siargao, and Surigao del Norte were severely affected. Many civilians continue to struggle without water, power, food, shelter, and other basic necessities.
In the aftermath of the storm, Gwen Garcia has remained active in providing relief to those people who are residing in Cebu. Aside from refusing to demand government aid, the governor has affirmed that relief operations in the province were going well.
“The people are disciplined. Everything is orderly. There is no chaos, no riot,” she stated, denying reports that Cebu was in a state of “disorder” and chaos after the typhoon Odette.
She also recently allocated P500 million to help restore the livelihood of Cebuanos and has set aside funds in the 2022 budget for the procurement of generator sets. Additionally, they distribute satellite phones and UHF-VHF radios to LGUs everywhen in Cebu.
