Francisca Susano, who is widely believed to be the oldest living person in the Philippines and the world, has died on Monday at the age of 124.
The news came from the city government of Kabankalan in the province of Negros Occidental, who dedicated a post to her on their Facebook page.
“It is with sadness in our heart when we received the news that our beloved Lola Francisca Susano passed away early this Monday evening November 22,” the announcement read. “Lola Iska is considered the oldest person in Negros Occidental and in the Philippines. Her official declaration as the oldest person in the world at 124 years old is currently validated by the Guinness World Records. Mayor Pedro Zayco, Jr., Vice Mayor Raul Rivera and all city officials as well as all the people of Kabankalan City condole and pray with the family of Lola Iska in their period of bereavement. Lola Iska will always remain as our inspiration and pride.”
Jake Carlyne Gonzales, the city public information officer, told CNN Philippines that a cause of death has yet to be determined.
The supercentenarian was born on September 11, 1897, right before the Philippines gained independence from Spain. As of September, the Guinness World Records was still in the process of verifying documents needed to declare Susano as the world’s oldest living person.
Simultaneously, Senior Citizens Party-list Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes also filed a resolution requesting the House of Representatives to grant Susano a ₱1 million cash gift for her “monumental achievement.” The funds would have also been used to benefit her and her family during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The resolution is currently pending with the Committee on Senior Citizens.
