Disney adds more star power to live-action Pinocchio’s cast

The Disney train of live-action remakes isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, and as first reported in 2015, its next stop will be Pinocchio.

To recreate the story of Pinocchio in live-action, Disney has recruited some of the biggest names in key roles. Last week, the company announced the latest additions to the cast: per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has tapped Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Jiminy Cricket, while Cynthia Erivo is set to be the Blue Fairy.

They join Tom Hanks who plates Pinocchio’s creator, Geppetto, and The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the titular puppet. The movie is helmed by Robert Zemeckis who, coincidentally, has also worked with Hanks in a few films that you might have heard, like Forrest Gump, Cast Away, and The Polar Express.

Also part of the remake is Lorraine Bracco, who will voice a new character named Sofia the Seagull, and Luke Evans who plays The Coachman. Keegan-Michael Key, who also lent his voice as Kamari in the live-action version of The Lion King, runs it again by playing Honest John.

The movie is set to begin production later this month in the U.K., with an imminent release on Disney+.

Disney’s Pinocchio is based on an Italian novel by Carlo Collodi which tells a story of a living wooden puppet. Guided by Jiminy Cricket as his conscience, Pinocchio must prove himself to be “brave, truthful, and unselfish” to become a real boy.
