How to ‘Fake It ‘Til You Make It’ in the Workplace

The workplace can be extremely daunting.

With perfectly accredited higher-ups and seemingly put together colleagues, it can be hard to establish yourself in the arena. But, if you’ve ever heard the phrase “fake it ’til you make it,” you’ll know that you have a fighting chance. Here’s how:

Team up

If you’re not a team player, then start being one. Sometimes, no matter how hard you work, you’ll still be affected by team performances. To counter that, start befriending your coworkers and teammates. Get along with them, discuss game plans with them, and provide your own inputs, even if you don’t really like them. We’re not telling you to be fake to everyone around you, but having good relations in the workplace can help build your own support system, which in turn, can boost your confidence.

Act confident

The key word here is act. Even if you don’t necessarily feel confident one day, acting like it (bright smile, chin up, good posture) can help you trick yourself into feeling strong. Acting confident will give you the push you need to excel in tasks, despite the doubts within yourself. If you keep up your façade, one day, you’ll no longer need to act; you’ll be confident.

Get real

Understand that no job is easy. There was never going to be a workplace where you didn’t have to struggle to move up. Realizing your challenges and accepting the circumstances can actually help you feel more at ease on the job, because your expectations are aligned. So, although you’re not 100% sure how to do that one thing, feel at peace knowing that you’ll learn and master it in time.

Believe in yourself

Impostor syndrome strikes many millennials struggling to find purpose in life and work. Many 20-somethings believe that they aren’t qualified enough to do what they’re doing, or even apply to what they want to do. Though you might feel this way, you’ve got to know that there is some value to being who you are. If you can’t see it, take a seat and write down all your good qualities, from your personality to your work ethic, and frame that list in your bedroom. You need to draw power from your strengths and work on manifesting things for yourself.
