Feel like the country’s already forsaken and you just want to leave this world? Don’t worry, a lot of us feel the same way — about 1.7 million of us to be exact.
To get people to be excited about the next-generation Perseverance Rover’s mission to Mars this year, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA is letting people sign up so their names can be a part of the historic journey to the Red Planet.
And boy, did we bite. So far, more than 3 million people and counting have signed up to send their names with the Philippines topping the chart at more than 1.8 million participants. You can click this link to see the statistics yourself.

After all, it’s free. In fact, people can sign up to send their names every time NASA launches a spacecraft onto outer space. To wit, this was the ninth time that NASA has opened the chance to the public.
Once you’ve signed up, they will assign you your virtual boarding pass so you can share with others about your “trip” to Mars. All names will be reviewed, assessed, and approved before they get etched onto a microchip to be placed aboard the next Mars rover.
The Perseverance Rover has set off to Mars on July 30 at 7:50 AM EDT, to explore signs of ancient life, and is due to land Mars after a seven-month voyage in February 2021 at the base of the Jezero crater on.
Didn’t make the deadline? It’s okay; NASA still accepts submissions of names for their future explorations to the Red Planet.
As to when we can physically visit Mars, however, is anyone’s guess.
