Have You Heard of the Crypto-Hamster?

What would you say if you were told that a crypto-trading hamster was beating out real-life, human investors? Yeah, we couldn’t believe it either.

But it’s true. His name is Mr. Goxx and he’s a hamster whose portfolio is up around 20% — more than Nasdaq 100, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway, and the S&P 500.

The pocket-sized trader wakes up every morning and goes to his very own trading office, where he goes for a run on an “intention wheel” that spins through various cryptocurrency options. He then decides whether to buy or sell certain assets by going through two tunnels that are labeled “Buy” and “Sell.”

After making his decision (running through the tunnel), electronics connected to his trading office complete the trade. The whole process is watched through Twitch livestream, where Mr. Goxx has garnered up to 11.7k views.

The masterminds behind the business-savvy hamster are two German men in their 30s, who started the project on a whim.

“We felt that everything keeps getting more expensive these days and building savings is super hard to achieve with high rents to pay,” they told BBC. “It seems like most people from our generation see no other chance than throwing a lot of their savings on the crypto market, without having a clue what’s going on there.”

They added, “We were joking about whether my hamster would be able to make smarter investment decisions than we humans do.”

As for smart investments, Mr. Goxx has that covered. He started off in June with an initial bankroll of €326 (PHP19,000) and is now up by €63.27 (PHP3,700), some 19.41 per cent.

Despite the impressive portfolio, Mr. Goxx’s owner has maintained that the project isn’t meant to impart serious financial advice. To emphasize this, posts from the hamster’s Twitter page always end with a disclaimer reminding followers that their content is purely for entertainment purposes.

Avid Mr. Goxx fans can expect to see an expanded Goxx box in the near future. “We have many features in mind that would make the whole thing much more fun to watch and would mean even more space for Mr. Goxx to play around in,” the German pair said.
