Diminutive comedienne Mahal, or Noeme Tesorero in real life, has passed away this afternoon, August 31 at a hospital in Tanauan, Batangas, her sister Irene Tesorero confirmed. She was 46.
According to her sister based in the US, Mahal succumbed to “gastro illness” and was also discovered positive to the coronavirus mere minutes before she passed. Mahal also dealt with high blood pressure and other pre-existing conditions brought about by age and her dwarfism.
Born in Virac, Catanduanes on December 29, 1974, Mahal became an icon in the 90s by ironically standing out in an era of comedians due to her short stature. Despite her height deficit, she has always dreamt of making big in the entertainment industry. This was a dream that her grandmother, who endowed her the namesake “Mahal,” wholeheartedly supported — and one that she achieved in her own right.
With over a dozen acting credits under her belt, Mahal made an indelible impression in the field of comedy through classic movies such as 1991’s Anak ni Janice joining another legendary comedian Rene Requiestas, 1997’s Kokey, and 2003’s Mr. Suave alongside Vhong Navarro. She also made a splash on TV in shows such as “Sis,” “Toda Max,” and her last project, GMA’s “Owe My Love.”
When the pandemic hit, Mahal crossed over to social media and started her own 200,000 subscribers-strong YouTube channel where she posted vlogs that featured model and actor Mygz Molino.
Upon hearing the news of her passing, fellow comics Jerold Napoles and KaladKaren whom Mahal got to share the screen with poured their condolences to the comedienne. Ken Chan, who led the cast of “Owe My Love,” expressed his gratitude for Mahal’s presence on Facebook, while Miss Q & A runner-up Brenda Mage paid homage to Mahal’s good deeds.
