What Peter Dinklage Has to Say About the “Game of Thrones” Criticism

It’s not a secret that ending of the immensely popular HBO series “Game of Thrones” left fans more than unhappy. Through complaints of hasty writing, plot holes, and anticlimactic endings, the last season of GOT certainly did not live up to the legacy it had built for the past eight years.

And while some actors from the show have either kept mum or voiced out their own opinions on the last hurrah, one very memorable character has admitted that escaping the criticism was as difficult as it seemed.

“You try [to avoid the chatter], but that was impossible,” Peter Dinklage, who took on the role of fan favorite Tyrion Lannister, told The Sunday Times. “You’re reminded of it on a daily basis by the fans. They had deep knowledge, but if somebody loves something they have their version of it in their head, so we got criticism early.”

He acknowledged that the series might’ve not been what fans had been waiting for. “When we were leaving, they criticized again because they didn’t want us to go. Some got angry. But if you appeal to everyone you’re doing something wrong. And we offended a lot of people.”

Dinklage became a staple for “Game of Thrones,” being present for all eight seasons and winning over fans with his quick wit and well-balanced character. He has stated that he loved and missed playing Tyrion, calling the experience “such a joy.”

And even though critics of the show had a lot to say about the last season, the 52-year-old has been pretty consistent with how he views the ending.

“The show subverts what you think, and that’s what I love about it,” he told The New York Times in December 2021. “Yeah, it was called Game of Thrones, but at the end, the whole dialogue when people would approach me on the street was, ‘Who’s going to be on the throne?’ I don’t know why that was their takeaway because the show really was more than that.”
