Experts Weigh In on How Often One Should Bathe

There has been an ongoing debate on the internet about how often one should bathe after celebrities like Jake Gyllenhaal disclose their opinions regarding daily showers. It all stemmed from Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher’s comment about their childrens’ bathing schedule. Whether it’s a question of hygiene or health, it’s time we let the experts weigh in.

Is it a matter of health and hygiene?

While a daily shower is a norm for most people, many don’t necessarily do it for health benefits. According to Harvard Health, It’s more likely that they do it out of habit and adherence to societal standards. Another factor linked to the number of bathes one takes is their geographical location and climate. For example, those living in tropical places may prefer showering more often than someone living in a colder region.

So, how often should you bathe?

We already know that showers are essential for personal hygiene and keeps the body odor at bay. Babies and children aged 6-11 years old only require full-body washes every few days, as per Medical News Today. It isn’t until they hit puberty that people take more regular showers as they are physically active at this stage. Occupations involving “dirty work” such as butchers, janitors, and garbage collectors need to clean up after each shift. Those spending most of their time indoors and work desk jobs may opt for less frequent showers.

What if you can’t imagine going a day without a shower?

We get it — the thought of not taking your daily shower makes you feel icky. If you really must, only shower once a day and limit it to 5 to 10 minutes. On the flip side, if you decide to shower every other day instead, Healthline suggests giving yourself a sponge bath using gentle soap or cleanser. Wash bacteria-prone areas like the face, armpits, and groin with a washcloth, and always moisturizer afterward.

Showering more than once a day could leave your skin feeling dry, irritated, or itchy as you are ridding “good bacteria”. Unless you’re filthy, sweaty, or have spent too much time outdoors, experts say showering several times a week will suffice.
