’90s actresses join forces in this adaptation of a Korean film!
’90s star Angelu de Leon returns to showbiz after a two-year hiatus since she entered politics and won as Pasig councilor.
She is one of the lead stars of VIVA Films’ upcoming adaptation of a Korean movie titled “Sunny.” What makes the film more exciting is that Angelu will be working with popular actresses of the ’90s era who worked on VIVA’s milestone projects.
Part of the cast are Vina Morales, Ana Roces, Candy Pangilinan, Sunshine Dizon, Katya Santos, and Tanya Garcia.
Angelu shares this when she and FreebieMNL caught up at her Pasig City Hall office on July 31, 2023.
She says, “Nagsa-start na silang mag-shooting, ako siguro second week pa of August.
“Maganda kasi nga unang-una, kampante ka doon sa mga kasama mo. Nakakanerbiyos kasi parang sila, hindi sila huminto sa showbiz pero ikaw huminto ka.
“So, parang, ‘Ah, paano nga ho ba ito?’ Maninibago ka na naman sa paghihintay [sa set] at saka balanse of how to do my work now and then the showbiz life.”
The ’90s actress—except for Tanya—already attended a look test as part of the film’s preparation.
How did they react upon seeing each other again?
Angelu shares with a laugh, “Wala, naghihiyawan kami, mukha kaming mga tanga. ‘Ay!!’
“Kasi nakakatuwa, noong nakita ko si Ate Vina at saka si Ana, wow, ‘Kadenang Bulaklak.’ ‘Tapos parang si Sunshine naman, ‘Inagaw na Bituin.’
“Nakakatuwa kasi parang lahat ng ’90s babies, pinagsamsama. Umikot yung VIVA ng era na yun, nandoon lahat.”
At some point, Angelu was able to work with her co-stars during their heydays as young stars.
Angelu, Vina, and Ana are the leads of the 1994 VIVA movie “Kadenang Bulaklak” with Donna Cruz.
She also worked with Tanya in the 2001 series “Sana Ay Ikaw Na Nga” and more recently, with Sunshine Dizon in the 2019 GMA-7 afternoon drama “Inagaw Na Bituin.”
The set of actresses was also at some point signed with VIVA and headlined some of their landmark projects in the ’90s to the early 2000s. Aside from “Kadenang Bulaklak,” Angelu was the lead star of the youth-oriented show “T.G.I.S,” while Sunshine joined its second batch.
Sunshine, Katya, and Tanya worked together in the long-running Sunday series “Anna Karenina” from 1996 to 2002. Vina headlined several VIVA drama and action movies while Candy mostly played best friend to leads of VIVA movies.
Angelu says that her younger version will be portrayed by Bea Binene.
Other young VIVA stars who will play their teenage counterparts are Heaven Peralejo, Heart Ryan, Abby Bautista, Aubrey Caraan, Ashley Diaz, and Ashtine Olviga.
Angelu’s last regular project was the 2021 TV5 series “Di Na Muli” with her perennial on-screen partner, Bobby Andrews, and Julia Barretto in the lead role. Months later, she decided to enter politics and eventually won a post as councilor in Pasig.
Why did she decide to accept another project despite her busy schedule as a councilor?
What she’s more particular about is accepting teleseryes because of the schedule.
“Mas nagsala kami pagdating sa teleserye. Una kasi, dahil dati, in terms of scheduling, nahirapan kami dati kasi ang session namin, Thursdays ‘tapos may Monday pa kaming flag ceremony and I don’t want to miss both.
“So, automatic, kumbaga sa taping days, dalawang araw akong hindi pwede, so, ang tight ng schedule. E, ngayon dahil nalipat na yung session namin sa Mondays, mas madali sa other days. So, hopefully after nito, parang meron kaming teleserye.”
According to Angelu, VIVA has offered her to do a TV series that might start in October but she can’t divulge anything yet about the potential project.

Love team with Bobby Andrews
Angelu’s love team with Bobby Andrews, which started in “T.G.I.S,” still continues to resonate with their fans that they always get projects together.
After “Di Na Muli,” they recently headlined an episode of “Magpakailanman.”
Angelu admits that they owe it to the fans why their love team still exists now.
“Mainly 95% of that is because of the fans kasi yun nga, habang may tumatangkilik.
“Hindi mo naman pwedeng i-push yung isang bagay kung walang may gustong manood noon. Pero the fact nga na marami pa ring humahanga sa Bobby-Angelu, Jolina-Marvin, nakakatuwa.
“Kaya marami pong salamat. Binibigyan niyo po kami ng trabaho,” she says with a laugh.
It also counts that she and Bobby had a good working relationship despite the controversies they had in the past.
“Siguro kapag inisip mong ganun, wala kasing personalan, di ba? Wala kaming, ‘We don’t like to work with each other!’ Wala kaming, ‘My gosh, siya na naman?’
“So, I guess malaking factor yung friendship, malaking factor yung whatever happened in the past, it was in the past and kahit papaano, well I can only speak for me and Bob, na-resolve naman namin kung ano yung dati kaya siguro yun yung nakikita ng mga tao.“
There is actually a possibility that Bobby might be Angelu’s partner in “Sunny” since VIVA is also getting ’90s actors for the roles of their partners.
But at the time of the interview, Angelu does not know yet who will her partner be.
Hahaha! Kami pa rin pala!”
