Why Demi Lovato Switched Back To Using “She/Her” Pronouns

Demi said she got tired of constantly explaining her pronouns to others

Pop star Demi Lovato has revealed that she has re-adopted she/her pronouns as a way to manage how people address her.

In 2021, Demi announced that she identified as non-binary and would use they/them pronouns. But, a year later, the singer has decided also to embrace she/her pronouns.

Speaking to GQ Hype Spain (translated by People), Demi explained that constantly educating people and explaining their pronouns had become exhausting. The singer said, “That is one of the reasons that have led me to also feel comfortable with the feminine pronoun.”

Despite the pronoun change, Demi acknowledged that they still face practical and emotional challenges related to gender identity.

Demi stated, “I see myself conditioned to choose a woman because there [aren’t other options]. I think this has to change. Hopefully with time there will be more options.”

Although advocating for gender rights can be tiring, Demi emphasized the importance of continuing to spread awareness and effect change. She said, “I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”

Besides her pronoun journey, Demi released a rock version of their 2013 song “Heart Attack” earlier this year to commemorate its tenth anniversary. The studio version features re-recorded vocals and fresh production by Warren “Oak” Felder and Mitch Allan, who produced the original song.
