“Shake Rattle & Roll” gets new showing date after failing to make it to MMFF
Sparkle artist Dustin Yu is set to make his big-screen debut in the latest installment of “Shake Rattle & Roll.”
The hit horror franchise, which features three horror stories, is set to make a comeback this year after nine years with the title “Shake Rattle & Roll: Extreme.”
Dustin is part of the episode entitled “Rage” with Jane de Leon, Paolo Gumabao, Bryce Eusebio, and Rob Gomez. Directed by Joey de Guzman, the episode is about a group of friends who are affected by a zombie infestation.
In an interview with FreebieMNL during the cast reveal of “Shake Rattle & Roll” on September 27 at 38 Valencia Events Place, Dustin shares some information about his role.
According to Dustin, his role is far from who he is in real life.
Si Bong, always on the go sa mga trip.”
Since he is tackling a comedic role, there are scenes that require him to do ad-libs.
He says, “Kung maka-try man ako ng comedy, dito kasi yung pagka-comedy niya, walang script. So, ad lib, ad lib lang. Medyo iba talaga siya.”
But it was a good thing that their director Joey de Guzman is collaborative.
He says of their director, “Sobrang gaan katrabaho. Kagaya nga ng sinabi ko, kaya ko nagawa yung role ko dito is because hindi ako na-intimidate sa lahat ng katrabaho ko lalo na kay Direk Joey.
“Kasi tuwing nagtatanong ako para lang kaming magkaibigan na, ‘Ganito kaya?’ Sobrang collaborative ni Direk Joey at saka sobrang light niyang katrabaho.”
Experience in doing horror
“Shake Rattle & Roll” does not only mark Dustin’s first film; it is also his first horror project.
For someone “matatakutin,” doing the film was really an experience for Dustin. In fact, he tried to avoid being the last one to take scenes.
“So, ang nangyayari, lagi kong pinagpe-pray na sana, hindi ako last pero ang nangyayari, ako yung laging last pung! So, na-experience ko na nag-shoot kami sa Tanay, parang camping site, ako yung last pung, ako yung last na umuuwi!
“E, anong oras na noon, 2AM na ata. E, lahat sila may kasama, lahat sila may kanya-kanyang P.A.; ako, wala. So, umuwi ako from Rizal papuntang Manila, takot na takot talaga ako.
“At saka yung mga set-up kasi, set-up ng horror, grabe, e. Akala ko, parang di ko mararamdaman na horror ito, pero noong nandun na ako, grabe.”
It was seen in the trailer that something will happen to his character. Aside from this, the story is also set in a zombie infestation phenomenon.
Because of the story, shooting the film required him to wear prosthetics, which was also a a first in his career.
He says about this, “Yung prosthetics, matagal siyang gawin. So, ako, nakakatulog ako habang ginagawa.
“At saka makati, makati siya sa katawan, mabigat. At saka sobrang kapal ng make-up kasi hindi ako sanay magpa-make up, e, sa set. Parang powder lang ‘tapos ang dami kailangan ilagay sa mukha.
“So, medyo nanibago ako. Mahirap pero kailangan gawin.”
He adds that wearing prosthetics also completed the experience of doing a horror film.
In the same year, Dustin signed with Sparkle, GMA-7’s talent management arm. He is set to appear in the upcoming primetime series “Black Rider” with Ruru Madrid, where he plays one of the kontrabidas.
Meanwhile, “Shake Rattle & Roll” was submitted to the MMFF 2023 but failed to make the cut. Hence, it will be shown on an earlier date on November 29, 2023.
