Janella Salvador admits she used to doubt herself as an actress before playing Valentina
Janella Salvador has no qualms on accepting more kontrabida roles—or any other role—after playing Valentina in ABS-CBN’s “Darna.”
Being cast as Valentina came as a surprise for her fans because she used to do lead roles.
Prior to “Darna,” Salvador’s roles were usually the goody-goody ones, including her characters in “Be Careful with My Heart,” “Oh My G,” “Born For You,” and “The Killer Bride.”
The Valentina role also served as Salvador’s comeback after giving birth to her son with Markus Paterson, Jude.
During the January 30 media conference of “Darna,” FreebieMNL asked Salvador about her next plans after “Darna.”
Salvador knows her next project will be ”crucial,” which is why why she has more things to consider.
She says, “I think it’s crucial naman talaga kung ano yung susunod kong gagawin pero hindi ko naman iniisip yun. Ang mas iniisip ko, kung maganda ba yung character, maganda ba yung story, mas doon ko siguro ibe-base.
“Okay din naman mag-bida-kontrabida, honestly, it really helps me grow.”

Janella Salvador admits: “I usually doubted myself before”
FreebieMNL also asked Salvador how her experience was in playing a kontrabida for the first time.
Aside from Valentina, Salvador also played the character’s human alter-ego, Regina Vanguardia, a fierce woman who shows concern to her town.
She answers, “Actually, portraying Regina was really an experience for me. I will never forget the process of getting into the character. Una ko pa lang nabasa yung script and what she stands for, I knew I had to do it.”
Stepping into the shoes of Regina made Salvador more confident with her standing in the showbiz industry as an actor.
The singer-actress continues, “I think this role really made me grow as an actress—no, I don’t think; I know it did. It really made me grow as an actress. It really gave me the confidence that I am really for this industry because I usually doubted myself before. This character gave me so much to learn.”
“Darna” airs its final episode on February 10, 2023 after a six-month run on ABS-CBN Primetime Bida.
After “Darna,” Salvador will work on her concert under Star Music.
