Multi-awarded indie movie “Kalel, 15” is coming to Netflix

This independent movie is also Eddie Garcia’s last feature project before his untimely passing, so watching this is one way of honoring his legacy.

After capturing a couple of awards in the recently-concluded Gawad Urian Awards last November 10, critically-acclaimed film Kalel, 15 is now set to land on Netflix this December 9

It tells the story of Kalel, played by Gawad Urian Best Actor winner Elijah Canlas in his breakout role, and his tribulations as an HIV-positive teenager living within a dysfunctional family. An illegitimate son of a priest (Eddie Garcia), a child to an incriminating mother (Jaclyn Jose), and a sibling to a sister with a drug addict as a boyfriend, Kalel must make tough decisions to survive — the kind that no children should be making.

Written and directed by Jun Robles Lana, Kalel, 15 has bagged numerous awards here and abroad, including Best Screenplay at the Gawad Urian Awards, a Best Director title at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival in Estonia, a Best Actor nod for Canlas at the Asian Film Festival in Italy, and a Best Editing prize at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival in Macau for Benjamin Tolentino.

It may not be the Christmas family flick to see, but its relevant story is something that everybody from a Catholic country like the Philippines should see at least once.
