Noah shared in the interview, “Fully embracing that Will was gay propelled me towards accepting it for myself. Having Will as a portrayal to embrace aided me in self-acceptance. Without that character, I might still be in the closet.”

On January 5, Noah used TikTok as his platform to come out, posting a video with the caption, “I guess I’m more similar to Will than I thought.”

He shared in the interview that he composed the post while returning from dropping off his twin sister at college, revealing he had doubts before making it public.

“I wanted to be secure in my identity and not care about others’ opinions. When I checked my phone after the drive, there were numerous messages of support with hearts, congratulations, and rainbow flags… I was emotional. I felt, ‘I’ve made it. I’m free from worry,” he said.

Noah emphasized that he wouldn’t have chosen any other way to come out but through the light-hearted TikTok post, aligning with his existing content on the platform.

He also reflected on the candid moment when he told his friends and family about his sexuality, reminiscing about the viral TikTok sound he used as background: “You know what it never was? That serious. It was never that serious. Quite frankly, it will never be that serious.”

Matt Duffer, one of the creators behind “Stranger Things,” noted that Noah’s character had always been intended to grapple with his sexuality.

When Noah auditioned for the role, the concept of his character’s journey didn’t give him pause. He shared, “I was so young; I barely even knew what that word meant. And I don’t even think I knew myself that I was gay,” Noah added.
