Vacuums are a nifty machine to have at home because they make cleaning a breeze. And although they all serve the same function, choosing one that would suit your needs can be difficult especially if it’s your first time buying one.
Aside from the budget, you might want to put into consideration what kind of surface you’re using it on, how or where you’re going to store it, how often you’re going to use it, and noise levels.
Upright Vacuums
This is the typical vacuum that homeowners have. As the suction head and motor are one unit, maneuvering over larger areas won’t be a hassle, but tend to be loud. They’re great for carpets and picking up pet hair and will require a big enough storage space to accommodate its bulky structure.
Canister Vacuums
What differentiates this from an upright vacuum are the separated motor and suction head, and usually come with interchangeable attachments or nozzles for harder to reach areas. It’s equally as effective in cleaning larger areas thanks to the long hose but may be heavy to tug along thicker carpets.
Cordless or Stick Vacuums
Most apartment owners prefer this type of vacuum because of how portable and quiet it is. It’s also easy to store, making it perfect for small spaces. The downside is the battery life isn’t that long, but it shouldn’t be a problem if it’s just going to be used for everyday cleaning.
Robot Vacuums
If you already have a vacuum and are looking into getting a robot to do a quick sweep while you’re away, it could definitely do the work. While they are cool to have, they don’t clean as effectively as other vacuums, though because their round shape makes it hard to reach into crevices and require a flat surface to roam around.

Handheld Vacuums
The size and portability make it ideal for cleaning compact spaces like car interiors or the inside of your drawers. It’s essentially a miniature version of a stick vacuum.
There are many vacuums on the market right now, many of which are at an affordable price. Hopefully, this list will help you narrow down your choices.
