Here’s What Janella Salvador Has To Say About People Who Look Down On Filipino Films

She says that Filipinos who hate on local films are “arrogant and condescending”

Janella Salvador recently addressed the issue of prejudice against Filipino films compared to their Hollywood counterparts in her recent Instagram update.

Her reaction was prompted by a screenshot shared on Instagram by “Under Parallel Skies” producer Richard Juan. The screenshot revealed a conversation where an acquaintance expressed disinterest in local films.

“As a new producer, these words really broke my heart. Ang sakit,” he said.

Richard added, “But this really highlights the challenge that we Filipino filmmakers face, because let’s be real—lahat tayo may mga kaibigan na ganun ’din. I get it, not every film will resonate with everyone, and that’s 100% fine. Criticism is part of it naman talaga. But dismissing all local films outright?”

He emphasized the need to recognize Filipino films as international cinema, challenging the notion that only Hollywood productions qualify as such.

“When they say that they want to watch ‘international films,’ they always think of Hollywood films. Pero hindi ba pwede international film din ’yung Filipino film?”

Janella reposted Richard’s Instagram story adding her thoughts on the matter. She criticized the attitude displayed by those who view local films in a bad light.

“People who think they’re too good for local films,” she wrote. “It doesn’t make you sound more sophisticated, just straight-up arrogant and condescending.”
