The “John Wick” legacy continues to live on with prequels releasing in the near future
Keanu Reeves reportedly wanted John Wick to meet his end in “John Wick: Chapter 4.”
The film, which was released in March, achieved impressive box-office success. It raked in $187.1 million domestically and $426.5 million worldwide, all within a reported $100 million budget.
The movie’s conclusion implied the death of Keanu’s iconic character, with Winston (Ian McShane) and The Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) paying their respects at John’s graveside.
Producer Basil Iwaynk revealed in a recent interview with Collider that Keanu initially sought a “definitive” exit in the fourth film.
“After the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally,” Basil explained to Collider.
“By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie.’ We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening.'”
Regardless of how little the chance, a “10% little opening” could pave the way for John Wick’s return. However, Basil expressed his contentment with the franchise and his initiative to sit back and wait for Keanu and director Chad Stahelski to figure out how to move forward with the story.
“We’ve all become such good friends and we all like each other so much and we’re all so tickled by the success of these movies, critically and commercially that we all think to ourselves, ‘Okay, how do we get the band back together in a way that merits a good story in the next evolution of John,'” Basil said.
With that, Basil alludes to exploring what’s next for the iconic character and his world, with a commitment to delivering a compelling story rather than forcing another installment.
The “John Wick” franchise lives on with the upcoming prequel TV series, “The Continental,” set to debut on the Peacock streaming service on September 22, 2023.
