Mike Enriquez peacefully joined our Creator today, August 29
Veteran journalist Mike Enriquez died at the age of 71, as confirmed by GMA Network on Tuesday, August 29.
The statement reads: “It is with profound sadness that GMA Network announces the passing of our beloved Kapuso, Mr. Miguel ‘Mike’ C. Enriquez who peacefully joined our Creator on August 29, 2023.”
Mel Tiangco, Mike’s partner in “24 Oras,” read the statement during the end of the Kapuso flagship newscast.
Mike’s family and close relatives are yet to issue statement about his passing.
Prior to his untimely demise, Mike had served the public as an esteemed broadcaster of “24 Oras” for over two decades.
Mike had been out of GMA Public Affairs’ “24 Oras” since December of 2021, when he needed to take a medical leave for a kidney transplant.
While he had his return in March 2022, it was only a few months later that he was observed to be absent again.
In November 2022, Arnold revealed that Mike needed an extra leave over kidney-related health issues, but he assured the public that the reporter was faring better.
Mike Enriquez’s journalism history
Mike Enriquez is considered one of the pillars of Philippine media, with a reputable work background dating back as far as 1969 when he started as a staff announcer at the Manila Broadcasting Company.
In the ensuing years, he then took the larger duty of being a broadcast reporter, editor, program director, and station manager for numerous radio stations until in 1994 when he assumed the head post of GMA Network’s radio division.
In 1995, Mike had his first-ever television appearance as an anchor for the 1995 senatorial election.
Throughout his career, he managed to establish and banner some notable programs, including “Saksi: GMA Headline Balita,” “Saksi sa Dobol B,” and “Imbestigador.”
