Ex-Streetboys Dancer Spencer Reyes Opens Up About Being Bus Driver Abroad

Spencer reveals that he experienced discrimination while working abroad

If you see a bus driver in the United Kingdom who looks similar to Spencer Reyes, you might find that it is actually the former Streetboys member who is behind the wheel.

Spencer candidly revealed that he actually experienced discrimination while working abroad but did not make a big deal out of it.

This 2024, he is back in the Philippines to heat up the dance floor once again.

Spencer returns to the Philippines to perform for “The Sign ’90s Supershow: A Benefit Concert.” It will take place this Friday, April 19, 2024, 6:00 pm, at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

During the April 9 press conference at Farmer’s Plaza in Cubao, Spencer revealed through a Zoom interview that he has a lot of respect for bus drivers in the Philippines after experiencing what it is like to work in this field.

Nagda-drive ako dito ng bus, any kind of bus, coach, double decker.

For me, na-experience ko as a bus driver rito, mahirap din naman. Pero mas mahirap diyan sa Pilipinas.

“Dito, mahirap pumasok [as a bus driver]. Bihira lang ang mga Asians na nagda-drive rito ng bus. Mahirap pumasok rito pero once nakapasok ka na, okay na. Kaya saludo ako sa mga bus driver natin diyan sa Pilipinas,” he pointed out.

Spencer narrated that he was a nurse before he went to London.

Before ako dumating dito, I was a nurse.

“Nag-aral ako ng Nursing sa Pilipinas kasi hindi ka makakapunta rito sa London if di-diretso ka as bus driver. Kailangan may skills ka rin.

“So nag-aral ako ng Nursing diyan, and then may kumuha sa aking employer. Then, nagtrabaho ako sa healthcare for about 10 years.

“Then nag-shift ako as a bus driver because of the benefits. Nagustuhan ko yung offer. I’ve been here for 16 years. As a bus driver, six or seven years.”

He admitted to having experienced discrimination but he downplayed it by saying, “Kahit saan ka naman magpunta, even diyan sa Pilipinas, may discrimination.

Totoo yan. Kahit na ka-lahi mo, madi-discriminate ka. Lahat naman nakakaranas nun pero minor-minor lang.”

The teen heartthrob starred with Judy Ann Santos in the ABS-CBN TV series “Esperanza” in 1997.

Former love team with Ice Seguerra

When asked about his former love team partner Ice Seguerra, Spencer said with a laugh: “Ang naalala ko kay Ice Seguerra, dahil sa kanya nagpa-tattoo ako. Matagal din kaming may pinagsamahan ni Ice pero sana magkita uli kami.”

Spencer said that he had no hesitations about accepting this project when he found out that he will be reunited with his fellow Streetboys crew: Maynard Marcellano, Danilo Barrios, Christo Cruz, Nicko Manalo, Joey Andres, and Michael Sesmundo.

Spencer feels grateful to be given this opportunity to once again showcase his dancing skills.

Sa buhay, ganun talaga. You’ll never know what you’ll get. ‘Tapos ngayon there’s this production that believes in us along with the other groups like the Manoeuvres and X People.

Members of the popular ’90s dance group The Streetboys will perform at the show along with other equally popular dance groups from the era (Universal Motion Dancers, Manoeuvres). They will be joined by the Kids At Work, Power X People, Abztract, Bigmen, Dyna Turbo, Teensquad, katz22, Black & White, Mastermind, Blain, and Wildcat Queens, among others.

Wowie de Guzman of UMD is busy with other commitments but he has indicated that he will go to this nostalgic event.
