Have you ever thought of traveling alone? The idea of self-discovery on your very own soul trip is enticing, especially with all the unique people you’ll meet and all the experiences you’ll have. While it can be exciting to think of all the things you can do while going solo, there are a couple of things to consider before you take the plunge. Read on to find out.

Top Tips for Traveling Alone

Always have money

Vacations are not cheap, especially if you’re traveling alone and paying for everything out of your own pocket. Before you even hop on that plane, you’ve got to make sure your cards are loaded and ready to go. Always have spending cash and emergency cash prepared and have contingency plans for when things go awry. Going to an unfamiliar place with no money in hand can quickly turn a dream getaway into a nightmare, so skip the stress and plan ahead.

Be vigilant

Traveling solo can be a life-changing, soul-shaping experience — but it can also be very dangerous. When you’re alone, it’s easier to get mugged, kidnapped, or taken advantage of simply because you have no other travelers who can help take account of you. That being said, it’s important to be vigilant when you’re traveling alone. Remember landmarks, send pictures to friends (even if they’re far away), and always have a list of emergency contacts with you. It might seem like a lot of work, but it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Know where you’re going

You might get that wanderlust urge to travel about with no plan in mind. Though it sounds ideal, it’s actually safer to know where exactly you’re going. Research the general area that you’re staying in, familiarize yourself with the nearest police stations and hospitals, and find out which neighborhoods to steer clear from. You can still travel freely with spontaneity, but a little research won’t hurt you!

Pack light

You do not want to be lugging around two heavy suitcases and a backpack on your solo travels. It’s bulky, inconvenient, and just plain difficult! To make the most out of your once-in-a-lifetime trip, pack light. Take only what you need and then some, but leave out the extra outfits and unnecessary items. Keep in mind that you might also be purchasing things along the way, so make sure to leave some extra space in your bags.

Do what you want to do!

It’s your vacation, your precious “me” time. Take the opportunity to do anything you want to do! Traveling alone means that you don’t have to deal with annoying family members or drunk friends. You can see all the sights you want to see and eat all the food you want to eat. Enjoy yourself to the fullest because this vacation is all about you.
