In celebration of his 21st birthday in 2019, rapper and entertainer Jaden Smith set up a food truck in the homeless sector of Los Angeles, Skid Row, to feed individuals in need.
The “I Love You” food truck served healthy vegan food to the homeless population for free.
Now, Smith has furthered his initiative and decided to open up a new restaurant with the same concept. The “I Love You” restaurant will ensure that all homeless people will get to eat free of charge, but with a little twist for regular restaurant goers.
“It’s for homeless people to get free food,” said Smith. “But if you’re not homeless, not only do you have to pay, but you have to pay for more than the food’s worth so that you can pay for the person behind you.”
The restaurant is not the first of the actor’s initiatives.
To combat the Flint water crisis in Michigan, Smith headed the JUST water company, which provided a water filtration system to the city of Flint. The Water Box, which allowed residents to fill up 10-gallon storage containers with water free of lead and contaminants, was initially able to provide the equivalent of 300,000 bottles of water.
The project has since expanded from Michigan to New Jersey, providing clean water for a wide range of citizens.
During the pandemic, Smith also sent out care packages to the homeless in Skid Row. The care packages were complete with food, masks, clothes, and hand sanitizer.
The response to his initial food truck was extremely positive, with many fellow celebrities applauding the young star.
In response to an Instagram post from the food truck, Kevin Hart wrote, “This is so dope. I love what you are doing man.”
Taraji P. Henson also commented, “PROUD OF YOU YOUNG MAN!!!!!”
With the launch of Smith’s actual restaurant, we hope many more will support him in his philanthropic endeavors.
