Julia Montes admits that having no chemistry with Alden Richards is her “greatest fear”
Alden Richards reveals that he was “not in a good place” while filming his latest movie, “Five Breakups and a Romance.”
He shared this with the press during the press conference for his movie at GMA Network Center on October 4, 2023.
In fact, based on what he mentioned, it was him, co-star Julia Montes, and director Irene Villamor who were “not in a good place.”
He says, “Kami pong tatlo, when we started [doing the movie], parang we were not in a good place in our lives.
“But this film has done something in our lives, na changed us and made us stronger.”
Coming out of the film stronger, Alden declares, “Sasalo ako ng bala sa dalawang ito, e.”
With what he mentioned, FreebieMNL then asked Alden during the Q&A if he could elaborate about being “not in a good place” back then.
The Sparkle artist answers, “Well, I don’t wanna go into details because it’s very personal.
“But I think, all I can share is how much yung nagawa ng paggawa ng ‘Five Breakups and a Romance’ sa buhay ko during that time.
“Alam ni Direk yun, alam ni Juls yun, nakwento ko sa kanila. And you know, sometimes, you think, parang you’re strong…”
Alden then stops and becomes emotional. To set his mood again, he just quipped, “Shot na lang!”
He then continues, “Pero minsan, iisipin mo, parang sasabihin mo sa mundo na, ‘Okay lang akong mag-isa. Kaya ko mag-isa.’ Pero hindi yun, e.
“I mean, more than the movie, more than the script, more than the work, more than the talent fee, and the opportunity that was given to me, ano yung nakuha ko sa kanila, to all the people that’s here.”
Alden also acknowledges the importance of giving credit to everyone involved in the film, from the cast to the production people such as the lights men, gaffers, and utility.
He then says, “They deserve credit for the success of certain projects, and with ‘Five Breakups and a Romance,’ we are giving the credit to all the people that are here right now.”
Aside from being the lead actor, Alden also serves as a co-producer for “Five Breakups and a Romance” under his own production company, Myriad Entertainment. He co-produced the film with GMA Pictures and Cornerstone Studios.
The movie, which is now in its second week of showing, has already reached the P30 million mark in ticket sales during its first week.

Alden and Julia’s chemistry
FreebieMNL has also asked Alden and Julia about building their chemistry for a romance movie.
Julia, who was the first to answer, says that one of her fears was actually not having chemistry with her partner, given that she did not do many projects involving love teams.
The Cornerstone artist explains, “Siguro, sa akin po, hindi kasi ako na-bless or parang hindi po ito yung natahak ko before na sanay ako sa love team and all. So, greatest fear ko talaga ito.”
It was good that she and Alden shared a genuine connection, which made the job easier.
Julia continues, “Pero yun po yung gift, e, kapag genuine yung tao, wala kang effort na gagawin, the chemistry will come, everything will come kasi may connection.
“Siguro, yun din yung gift ni Alden, generous kasi siyang tao. Ang nangyari lang talaga, nagsunud-sunod ito na yung connection na nabuo na di na namin na-explain. Because of this film, nabago talaga lahat.”

As for Alden, he credits Direk Irene’s magic in making their romantic scenes effective.
Alden recalls, “Our first day really started with the script reading. Direk Irene wanted to see how we read the script as actors and si Juls, nami-meet ko na every now and then sa events, sa mga shoots before pero I never really got the chance to be with her, talk to her.
“Pero yun kasi yung magic ni Direk Irene, unconsciously, hindi niya alam pero nae-empower niya lahat. Ganun siya mag-work. Alam niyo paano magtrabaho si Direk Irene in films, kung paano niya kausapin ultimo sa P.As, nagtatanong siya, ‘Kumusta yun sa inyo?
“So, I think that applied to us in the first day kasi yung comfort, yun yung comfort without giving comfort, I think that’s the main rapport, what happened here.
“Hindi ako nahirapan kahit I was not really in a good place at that time. Hindi nahirapan si Juls, di rin nahirapan si Direk.
“Parang naging safe place namin yung set, naging safe place namin yung storyline, naging safe place namin yung shooting days.
“That made us better people and that made us stronger people kasi hindi lang siya naging project, hindi lang sya naging basta pelikula, hindi lang kami umarte. It was a journey of the director and the actors that made us who we are right now.”
“Five Breakups and a Romance” tells the story of the characters of Alden and Julia and the complexities of their modern romance.
